Commonly referred to as ‘Nose job,’ Rhinoplasty, simply put, is a surgical procedure to reshape the nose. The reasons why Rhinoplasty may be necessary are varied, including but not limited to – making a nose tip better, reducing the flaring of the nose when smiling, augmentation of the nose bridge, narrowing an overly broad nose, straightening a deviated nose, amending a previous Rhinoplasty, etc.
As the popular saying goes, “Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder”, the definition of a handsome nose differs from person to person. What is beauty to one may be unattractive to others. So, if you don’t like the way your nose looks, are willing to undergo a surgical procedure to change it and are in good physical and mental health – Rhinoplasty is your answer.
The two general types of Rhinoplasty are ‘Closed’ Rhinoplasty (all incisions hidden inside the nose) and ‘Open’ Rhinoplasty (all incisions EXCEPT one small incision are inside the nose.)
There is a small incision across the Aligarh in ‘Open’ Rhinoplasty. This incision is only about 3 mm long and is hardly seen later. The decision on which technique will be used depends on individual technical evaluations such as the patient’s specific anatomy and his/her cosmetic request and the Surgeon’s experience with both the techniques.
Benefits of Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty can improve air flow & breathing
People experiencing breathing difficulties can gain significant relief by getting a functional nose job. This type of rhinoplasty is done to fix problems with the structures of the nose that limit airflow that affects normal breathing, or cause snoring. These problems are often due to birth defects, but may also be the result of trauma to the nose, which can lead to a deviated septum.
Functional rhinoplasty is done to clear airway obstruction, or to treat the internal nasal passages. Individuals suffering with nasal congestion that forces them to breathe mostly through their mouth, can benefit from surgery to remove airway obstruction.
Fix a Broken Nose
As the most prominent part of the face, the nose is the facial bone that often gets broken. Fights, accidents, falls and sports injuries are common causes of broken noses. A reconstructive rhinoplasty can fix any deformities caused by an injury.
Help with Sinus Problem
Rhinoplasty can help to treat chronic sinusitis or inflammation of the sinuses. When the sinuses get blocked and filled with fluid, they attract bacteria and get infected. If the patient has chronic sinusitis, or their sinusitis keeps coming back, the surgeon will check them for structural problems in the nose or sinuses.
