A Morning at the Junior Wing

Some of the best mornings start in a classroom full of tiny chairs, hand-drawn posters and children who are curious about everything. That was the scene when the MDW Centre team visited the Krishna International School junior wing for a camp with the youngest students of the school.

The room had been set up with care. Colourful cut-outs on the walls, play mats on the floor and a chalkboard with a message we liked a lot. Healthy teeth, happy life.

Why a School Health Camp Matters for Young Children

Children between three and seven years old pick up habits quickly. What they hear from a teacher or a visiting doctor at this age often stays with them far longer than what they are told later as teenagers.

A school health camp in Aligarh, or anywhere, does a simple job. It brings health conversations into a place where children already feel safe and comfortable. There is no waiting room and no unfamiliar building, just their own classroom and their own friends sitting beside them.

It also helps parents. A child who comes home talking about brushing or washing hands has opened a conversation the family can continue.

Meeting the Students One by One

The team spent time with the students in small groups and one at a time. Some children were bold and full of questions. Others needed a few minutes, a smile and a chat about the birds on the classroom wall before they settled in.

That pace was intentional. A child’s early experience with doctors shapes how they feel about every visit after it, so the aim was to keep the morning relaxed, friendly and free of any fear.

Healthy Habits for Children Parents Can Build at Home

A camp is a starting point. The everyday work happens at home. A few simple habits that suit young children are listed below.

1. Brush twice a day, in the morning and before bed, with a soft children’s toothbrush and a small amount of toothpaste. 2. Stay with your child while they brush until they can do it properly on their own. 3. Wash hands before meals and after using the toilet for as long as it takes to sing a short rhyme. 4. Keep sweets and sticky snacks to mealtimes instead of spreading them across the day. 5. Offer water through the day, especially after juice or biscuits. 6. Keep a regular sleep time, since tired children find every other routine harder.

None of this is complicated. The challenge is doing it daily, which is why a reminder from school and a reminder from home work best together.

A Thank You to Krishna International School

Visits like this happen only when a school makes space for them in a busy timetable. Our thanks go to the principal, teachers and staff of the Krishna International School primary wing for their warm welcome, the lovely classroom setup and for helping the children feel at ease throughout the morning.

We hope the students remember at least one thing from the day. Healthy habits, every day.
